Boston Fish & Seafood Market - red snapper

Boston Fish & Seafood Market (1484 Dorchester Ave,
Dorchester, MA 617-282-2980) is a little gem of a place right across the street from the Fields Corner T stop. They sell a decent variety of fresh fish which they will prep in a variety of ways - head off, skinned, boned etc. I bought one of the red snappers pictured here with the works; i.e., no fuss or muss for me, just ready to put in the pan.

They also sell fish dinners to go (fried, baked, broiled) with some of the best french fries I've ever had. I got fried clams with bellies but was so hungry when I got home that I just scarfed them down without a single thought about taking a picture.

I did a recipe search on epicurious.com for red snapper and just decided to wing it because there were so many.

I ended up near Haymarket the next day so I bought peppers and baby red potatoes. I've only been to Haymarket a couple of times and find it a bit too much. Super crowded, vendors who are not helpful (and I'm being generous).

Prices on these peppers were low (2/$1). So I got the yellow and orange from one vendor who let me pick my peppers, threw them in the bag and took my money. Guy I bought the red pepper, lemon and potatoes from was an insulting jerk (I should have made a stink but it was the end of the day and I really just wanted to get home.

None of the pictures of the finished meal came out that great but it was fantastic, probably one of the best meals I made in quite a while.

Food from the Mothership

No, Ann Taylor Loft didn't start selling food. These are from the other mothership, Trader Joe's. I try to buy something I've never bought before every time I go to TJ's. First item, White Chicken Sesame Noodle Bowl was pretty good. The sauce had a nice, mild gingery flavor. The noodles were not mushy, the vegetables bordered on being too soft for me. The amount of chicken was decent but not generous.

The Vegetable Shu Mai were pretty tasteless until doused with the soy sauce concoction that came in the box.

Did you know...

That you have to take pictures of food when it is cold. Otherwise you end up with this whitish blob in your pictures. It's called steam.

Pictures later. I've got to avoid another of those unnecessary Admin Team meetings so am going to lunch early, er, or was that to an appointment. No, wait, I have to wash my hair.

Soup, mmm (part 2)

Here's what I'm cooking - pasta fagioli. I usually make this with cannellini beans but this time I tried it with kidney beans. I either didn't use enough beans or used to much of everything else because the ratios seemed wrong. I want at least one bean in every spoonful. But nothing to be done about it - I'm not soaking more beans overnight and adding them; that just wouldn't work. And the tomatoes - ehh - not the greatest. Still the soup was good. I had doubts about my stock this go round because it seemed a little cloudy but it seemed fine. One picture is of soup, one is of soup with cheese and cookbook (OK, sorry, I bought a camera, I started a blog. What did you think was going to happen?) - James McNair's Soup. He has a whole series - soup, fish, pizza, pasta, chicken, more. The recipes I've tried are fantastic; some are way over the top ingredients wise (for me anyway). The photography by Patricia Brabent is fantastic. She makes you want to cook and eat everything.
